Pilates with Souly Wellness
Hi, I’m KaRon. I work with clients to help them improve their movement, reduce and manage pain, and reconnect with their bodies. My comprehensive Pilates training has taught me how to move in functional, efficient, and pain-free ways so I can keep my body strong and healthy and continue doing the things I love. Now I’m here to help you do the same.
I was introduced to Pilates by my dancer friends when I lived in New York. At first, I just saw it as a great form of exercise because it was both challenging and fun. It was several years later when I discovered it was so much more.
When I was 18 I was in a serious car accident. The car flipped over several times and I was thrown from the vehicle. I landed on my spine at the base of my neck and after rolling uncontrollably for several yards, I jumped up immediately to see if I could walk, (not the best idea). Luckily there was no spinal damage but one arm had been split open, requiring over 40 stitches, and the other arm was fractured. At the time, I did not realize the effect this trauma would have on my body in the future.
After the accident, I neglected to go to physical therapy for my arm and I thought I would have to live with the pain and limitations resulting from the injury for the rest of my life. For years after the accident, if I fell asleep with my arm over my head, it would get stuck in that position. I remember the first time this happened, I tried to roll over while I was sleeping but was shocked awake by excruciating pain. I had to manually move my arm down from above my head. Over time, I found myself altering many of my movements with that arm in order to avoid pain.
That was my life for over a decade.
Later on, as I began training to become a certified Yoga and Pilates instructor, I learned how to modify so I was able to perform the movements required to teach. I made it work but I still wasn’t moving well and I was still experiencing pain.
That’s when I found Body Harmonics. When I was introduced to this method of Pilates, I discovered more than a series of exercises. I learned proper functional biomechanics and I was able to stop modifying the way I used my arm. I learned how to strengthen and release certain muscles to correct the imbalanced muscle patterns I had developed while compensating for the weaknesses and pain in my arm.
Occasionally I still slip into old habits, but now I have the tools to make physical adjustments to help me address them properly. Now, years after the accident, I often fall asleep with my arms above my head, without pain or getting stuck.
I don’t know if I actually think this position is comfortable - maybe I just do it because I can.
